In what turned out to be a huge night for nascent streamer Apple TV+, CODA and Ted Lasso were the biggest winners at the SAG Awards 2022, taking home the top ensemble prizes for feature films and TV comedy, respectively. With a drama ensemble win for Succession but two individual acting awards for Squid Game stars Hoyeon Jung and Lee Jung-jae, the television drama categories offered a welcome dose of suspense, while longtime awards season favorites like Will Smith (for King Richard) and Ariana Debose (for West Side Story) had the chance, at long last, to give the televised acceptance speeches most awards watchers have been expecting.
Emotions were running high in the room, as Vanity Fair's Rebecca Ford and David Canfield reported. Jessica Chastain was visibly shocked to win the best actress in a film trophy, reflecting on the 10 years she spent fighting to make the biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Will Smith teared up in his acceptance speech when thanking his young King Richard co-stars Saniiya Sidney and Demi Singleton, and the celebration lasted all night at the Squid Game table, as the cast of the Korean drama celebrated their breakthrough wins in the TV drama categories.

The Squid Game victories could be an interesting look ahead at the swiftly arriving Emmy season, where Netflix’s breakthrough drama hopes to become the first foreign language winner of the top drama prize. As for the Oscar race, which has a month left to go, Chastain’s victory upends what was already a wide-open best actress race, and Troy Kotsur’s solo trophy for CODA (in addition to the cast’s ensemble win) solidifies him as the strongest supporting actor threat to the category’s runaway critical favorite, The Power of the Dog’s Kodi Smit-McPhee. CODA is also a best picture Oscar nominee, and its ensemble win could make it a credible challenger to more lavish frontrunners like The Power of the Dog and Dune.
