THE REVIEWS: “I am so pleased with this product!” reads one review. “I have never used just one product on my hair…I only applied this product as directed after a wash and have been amazed with the results. Pros
Contains protein to repair hair
Cons
On the pricier side
“My favorite of any collection and routine is leave-in conditioner and a rich masque,” says celebrity hairstylist Nai’vasha. “Having it as a regular in your hair regimen is nourishment 365.” This hair mask from Nai'vasha's own line is designed to smooth split ends and flyaways as well as strengthen and repair hair.
THE REVIEWS: “My favorite masque is Curl Queen Intense Therapy Masque,” Nai’vasha says. “It’s enriched with CBD, manuka honey, and silk amino acids, which is humectant-heavy and nourishing food for the hair.”

Best Protein-Free Deep Conditioner
Briogeo Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Avocado Hydrating & Defining Mask
Pros

Cons
Doesn't contain protein
This protein-free deep-conditioner with 4.8 stars on Ulta relies on a huge combo of hair oils, like castor, avocado, chia, flaxseed, linseed, and sweet almond oils, to deeply soften, define, and enhance curls.
THE REVIEWS: “I have thick, low-porosity hair and sat under a steamer for 20 minutes, and I think the product works quite well,” wrote one customer. “My curls seemed to be more pronounced with less frizz after using it, so I think it's a keeper.”

Pros
Promotes growth
Cons
Not strong hold
If you didn't know about the hair-growth benefits of rosemary oil, well, now you do. It's one of the main ingredients in this top-rated, multi-tasking edge control that treats and strengthens your hair while it styles it.
THE REVIEWS: One reviewer wrote, “The formula does make my 4c hair curl up, but if you are doing a wash-and-go, this is perfect. It has a medium hold, clean ingredients, no white residue, and it really did strengthen my hair.”
6
Best Hair Repair Treatment
Olaplex No.0 Intensive Bond Building Treatment
Pros
Rebuild bonds in the hair
Cons
Not a lot of product for the price
Hairstylist and colorist Christin Brown previously told Cosmo that if you're thinking about dyeing your hair, prep it before your appointment with this deeply restorative treatment to ensure that you're a good candidate for a color service. And even if you don't have plans to color it, you'll be amazed by how much stronger your hair looks and feels after using this, trust.
THE REVIEWS: Here's what one of the thousands of positive reviews says: “My hair needed soooo much help. It was brittle and lacking luster but after using this product for over a 6 to 8-week period, I am quite pleased in the results. My hair is on the road to getting healthier with each use.”

Pros
A little expensive
Cons
One reviewer says it's not super moisturizing
Of course, you always want to use a heat protectant if you plan on heat styling your hair, and hairstylist Annagjid "Kee" Taylor previously told Cosmo that this moisturizing hair serum from Taylor's line is great for shine. And all the happy customers agree.
THE REVIEWS: One reviewer said, “I'm transitioning and this helps with the natural and permed parts of my hair. So impressed!!”
Pros
Smells amazing
Cons
Too heavy for thin hair
Hairstylist Frédéric Fekkai says, “Many people do not realize they are causing hair loss and serious breakage by being too rough with wet hair and not applying a treatment product.” For that reason, the hair pro recommends this detangling spray, made with vegan pea proteins that bond and repair, a blend of argan, jojoba, and coconut oils for nourishment and easy detangling, plus glycerin to seal split ends.
THE REVIEWS: “ It smells AMAZING and it actually hydrated and refreshed my naturally curly hair,” one review said. “The scent was fresh and clean and no greasy or stickiness.”

Pros
Affordable
Cons
Not great for low-porosity hair
If you took the hair porosity quiz and figured out your hair loses moisture fast, hairstylist April Kayganich previously told Cosmo to try a curl cream that has proteins and heavy moisturizers. This formula here has a one-two punch of protein and moisture, packed with keratin amino acids and shea butter to help your hair retain moisture.
THE REVIEWS: “Honestly, I've been using this cream since it came out, and I haven't had a bad hair day since,” one customer wrote. “It has a little bit of hold to it, but honestly, I pair it under a gel to get the best results. It leaves my hair moisturized but not weighed down and makes it extra shiny!”
Pros
Fragrance-free
Cons
Too heavy for fine curls
Low-porosity hair, on the other hand, can be protein sensitive. If that's the case for you, Kayganich recommends using products that are more hydrating and full of emollients. This curl cream is overflowing with moisture from jojoba oil, aloe, and shea butter.
THE REVIEWS: “I have been on a natural journey for about 9 months now,” reads one review. “My job environment dries out my hair during a 10 hr period, so I was looking for something to keep it moisturized. Enter Rahua. I use the control cream, the texturized, and 2 more products, and the magic combination helps my hair to stay coiled and frizz-free all day!”

Pros
No harsh detergents
Cons
Not for deep cleaning
Need a good, non-stripping, shampoo? Try this gentle, low-foaming shampoo with no sulfates, silicones, or parabens, which hairstylist Daisy "Daze" Henson previously recommended to Cosmo. It won't leave your hair feeling like straw but even works for those with oily hair.
THE REVIEWS: One reviewer wrote, “This shampoo is amazing. Hard to find a product that works well on my curly hair. My hair looks so healthy and the curls look great!”
Pros
Cheap
Cons
Leaves a slight film behind
When you find a product that adds optimal shine and moisture but doesn't make your hair strands feel heavy, you hold onto it forever. This cleansing conditioner is one you'll want to keep buying over and over again, and you can thank argan oil for that.
THE REVIEWS: “This is my new everything product,” wrote one customer. “I have a mixture of 4b and 4c hair and had massive knots and tangles. This product is like butter. It melts away the dryness and tangles leaving very soft, easy-to-manage hair. I can even get a comb through my hair or easily finger detangle.”

Pros
No crunch
Cons
A little sticky
This mousse has nearly 12k ratings on Amazon, and it's worth all the hype for a soft, non-flakey finish. Apply this mixture of almond, avocado, and olive oil after your leave-in conditioner to define your curls without drying them out.
THE REVIEWS: “I have 3c/4a/4b texture and it separates my curls PERFECTLY,” said one shopper. “Before this mousse my wash and go was never really a wash and go. I would have at least 5 steps. This has cut my styling time in half (only 15 to 20 mins) and my hair lasts for at least 3 to 4 days.”
Pros
Precision tip applicator
Cons
Thick consistency makes it hard to squeeze
Fekkai is a big fan of a treatment serum or oil in a natural hair routine—especially in the colder months or in areas that are very dry—for added shine, sealed split ends, and breakage prevention. This blend of jojoba oil and tea tree oil is good for promoting healthy hair and a healthy, balanced scalp, too.
THE REVIEWS: “I believe I’ve found my new hair oil,” one customer raved. “I’m currently wearing braids and needed something to moisturize my hair without oil dripping. Please try this one!”

Pros
Doesn't leave buildup
Cons
Bottle is tricky
We know you shouldn't choose your hair products solely based on how good they smell, but this blueberry-scented leave-in conditioner is pretty tempting. This leave-in conditioner with glycerin, aloe, and coconut oil provides the perfect amount of moisture for soft, bouncy curls that aren't weighed down.
THE REVIEWS: Here's what one reviewer wrote: “I love using this product when doing my protective styles such as twist outs. It helps me detangle my hair after washing and provides a lot of moisture!”

What is the best natural hair product?
There's no single natural hair product that's the best for everyone, and there's no one product that's great for all of your hair's needs, but you probs already knew that. What you want is to find the best product lineup for your hair. According to Dellinger, “every person with texture should at the very least have the following product solutions in their curl cabinet to take them from cleansing to styling," including:
- A sulfate-free cleanser
- A balanced strengthening and moisturizing hair mask for deeper conditioning
- A hydrating, detangling leave-in conditioner for tangle-free manageable curls
- Products that style hair without compromising the integrity

How to choose the best natural hair products
Seek out certain ingredients
- Glycerin. Nai'vasha says, “Glycerin is a must-have in my book for natural hair. It’s a natural humectant and helps control frizz.”
- Shea butter. This is Fekkai's go-to recommendation for intense hydration and enhancing 4a to 4c curls.
- Oils. In addition to shea butter, Fekkai also recommends monoi, jojoba, and argan oils are also excellent oils for curls.
Skip out on harsher ingredients
- Sulfates. “Sulfates are known to be overly efficient in removing dirt and debris from the hair, which for textured hair results in a dry, crunchy, desert wasteland,” Dellinger says.
- Alcohol. Nai'vasha says avoiding as much alcohol as possible is best. “Alcohol tends to dry the hair, which creates a bigger opportunity for breakage and harm to your precious strands.”
- Non-soluble silicones. Because curly hair tends to be drier by nature, Fekkai says to also avoid non-soluble silicones, which can make the hair more brittle.
“Ingredient fear is real!” Dellinger says. “Especially for type 4 naturals who may experience extreme dryness, shrinkage, and minimal elasticity.” That said, most ingredients perform differently based on the formula in which they're used.
“For example, your hair might love how glycerin performs in formula A but hate product formula B, which also contains glycerin,” Dellinger continues. For that reason, you want to use an ingredient label as a guide, but don't let it stop you if you like the results you get when using it.
